Shortstop Mike Aviles, who has been on the disabled list since May 23 with what was called a forearm strain, will have season ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow July 8. Dr. Lewis Yocum will perform the surgery in Los Angeles. "We came to this conclusion after further testing," manager Trey Hillman said. "Obviously, there is ligament damage." Hillman said the typical recovery time for a position player is 9-12 months, making it questionable whether Aviles will be ready when the 2010 season starts. Aviles rested his arm for more than a month with no throwing or swinging, but it failed to respond. Aviles was selected the Royals' 2008 player of the year after hitting .325 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI as a rookie.
