&bull NOTES, QUOTES
19 May 2012 at 3:47am
--SS Alcides Escobar, who has hit in 11 of his past 13 games, batted leadoff for the first time as manager Ned Yost continues to shake up his batting order. Escobar led off the game with a single and is hitting .296. --2B Irving Falu's infield single in the fourth extended his hitting streak to seven games. He also doubled in the seventh for his fifth multi-hit game. Falu, who has hit safely in every game he has played, has the second longest hitting streak for a rookie in the American League. --1B Eric Hosmer, CF Jarrod Dyson and 2B Chris Getz, three left-handed hitters, were not in the lineup Friday night against Diamondbacks LHP Joe Saunders. For Hosmer, who is hitting .174, it was his second straight game not in the starting lineup. Manager Ned Yost said all three would return to the lineup Saturday against Diamondbacks RHP Ian Kennedy. Dyson was used as a pinch runner in the ninth. --CF Mitch Maier made a rare start Friday. Maier had not started since May 16 and his previous start was April 26. Maier went 0-for-4 and is hitless in his past 14 at-bats to drop his average to .182. --Omaha RHP Jake Odorizzi went 6 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and three runs, while walking one and striking out four in 6 2/3 innings in his Class AAA debut against Tacoma in a no-decision. Odorizzi was promoted this week after dominating the Class AA Texas League. Omaha won 5-4 with OF Wil Myers, who was promoted at the same time, going 3-for-4 with a triple and RBI. In two Pacific Coast League games, Myers is 5-for-9. BY THE NUMBERS: 10 -- Royals who have batted in the second slot in the first 38 games. 2B Irving Falu joined that consortium Friday. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We can come up with all the excuses, all the reasons why, but the bottom line is we just need to play better. We need to pitch better and hit better at home. We've been really good on the road. We need to find a way to do it at home." -- Royals manager Ned Yost, on the Royals' 4-16 record at Kauffman Stadium.

&bull INSIDE PITCH
19 May 2012 at 3:47am
The Royals doubled their bad news Friday. While it was expected lefty Danny Duffy would undergo Tommy John surgery, the club also announced righty Blake Wood would go on the operating table for reconstructive elbow surgery. Duffy saw Dr. Lewis Yocum for a second opinion Friday to confirm that surgery would be necessary to repair a torn left ulnar collateral ligament. Duffy, 23, was 2-2 with a 3.90 ERA in six starts. He left a Sunday start at Chicago after only 13 pitches with the injury. Wood was a key component of the bullpen the past two years, making 106 appearances. He was 5-3 with a 3.75 ERA and a save last season. Wood has not pitched since spring training this year. Wood, like Duffy, was examined Friday by Dr. Yocum in Tempe, Ariz. The season-ending Tommy John surgeries will be performed in the next two weeks in Los Angeles. "Once a player gets to the big leagues and has Tommy John, his percentage of making it back are higher than a minor league player who has never been to the big leagues," Royals manager Ned Yost said before the 6-4 loss Friday night to the Diamondbacks. "They did the hard part, they got to the big league level before they had to have these surgeries, so we look for both these guys to come back as strong, or even stronger than before the injuries occurred." Duffy and Wood will become the third and fourth Royals pitchers to have Tommy John surgery within the past year. Joakim Soria, the Royals closer, had the surgery in April. Lefty John Lamb, who was considered the Royals' top pitching prospect in 2010, had the surgery June 3, 2011.
